Escomatic D2 & D4
The following lesson outline details the tasks needed to be a machinist on an Escomatic automatic screw machine.
Some of these tasks require the trainee to explain how something works to insure they have the required
understanding of the processes and are not simply memorizing procedures. All of the tasks listed will be a part of
the Performance Test within each lesson. To learn more about these tests and the training process itself, see the
Philosophy section.
These fifteen lessons will teach the trainee to perform a complete setup of the Escomatic D2 or D4. In addition, the trainee will learn to operate the machine and maintain the quality of the finished parts during operation.
Lesson 1: Basic Machine Components [ Top ]
After completing this lesson the operator will be able to locate, identify, and explain the purpose of:
- Stock Straightener Cam
- Stock Clamping Jaws and Cam
- Feed Rolls and Feed System
- D2 Counter Collet and Cam
- D4 Drill Drum Turret and Cams
- Tool Head and Stock Guide Bushing
- Belt, Pulley, and Motor Drives
Lesson 2: Basic Controls and Operation [ Top ]
After completing this lesson the operator will be able to locate, identify, and explain the purpose of:
- Location and Description of Operator Controls and Levers
- Stock Clamp Lever for Feed System
- Head Locking Lever for the Tool Head
- Camshaft Start/Stop Lever
- Hand Crank Wheel
- Procedures for Starting and Stopping the Machine
- Procedures for Raising and Lowering the D2 Counter Collet and D4 Drill Turret
Lesson 3: Machine Lubrication [ Top ]
After completing this lesson, the operator will be able to adjust and fill:
- Automatic Drip Oilers
- Ball Type Oilers
- Feed System Hydraulic Unit, Coolant Reservoir, Drill Turret Command Unit, and Main Gear Box
- Operate Coolant Valves
- Clean Coolant Filters

- Change Belts and Pulleys for Tool Head Speed, Stock Straightener Rotor Speed, Drill Spindle Speed
- Change Belt and Pulleys and Gears for Production Rate Changes
Lesson 6: Setting Up Cams [ Top ]
After completing this lesson the operator will be able to locate, identify, and change:
- Tool Cams 1 and 2
- Feed Cams 1 and 2
- Friction Clutch Cam
- D2 Counter Collet Cam
- D4 Drill Turret Cams and Counter Collet Cam

Lesson 15: Controlling the Quality of Parts [ Top ]
After completing this lesson the operator will be able to use the layout sheet and part print to adjust for:
- Overall Part Length
- Shank Length
- Incorrect Chamfer
- Axial and Radial Adjustments
- Cutoff Teats
